The parents of Lucy Hurst

Lucy Hurst was born 2 November 1807 in Adair County, Kentucky, probably named for her paternal grandmother, Lucy Hurst. She grew up there and in Bedford County, Tennessee, where her family moved when she was about four years old in 1811. She married George Washington Hudlow about 1825 in Bedford County. He was born about 1802 in Rockingham County, Virginia, formerly Augusta County, to George and Barbara Painter Hudlow. George's father died in 1812 in Williamson County, Tennessee, the older county from which Bedford was formed. In 1830, we find George Hudlow listed with his young family in Bedford County, Tennessee next to a "Burney"? Hudlow, an elderly female head of household. This was perhaps his mother, Barbara. One of her great granddaughters would be named "Burney", could this have been a family name or nickname? George enlisted on 14 May 1838 in Colonel Yoakum's Regiment, Tennessee Volunteer Militia, for service in the Cherokee War of 1838. He became a captain in that service. He is said to have died on 3 April 1849 in Bedford County at the young age of 44. We do not have a burial place yet. In the next year, Lucy Hudlow, age 45, was listed in Bedford County, Tennessee. She had five hundred acres of land and five children still in the home. In 1860, still in Bedford County, Lucy was listed as a Hudson and three of her children were still home. By 1870, in Bedford County, Lucy "Hudler" was aged 62 and lived with her daughter Sarah, a 28 year old school teacher. Next door was Lucy's daughter Elizabeth Hudlow Reavis with her husband David. In 1880, Lucy lived in Hurricane, Moore County, Tennessee, with her son Joseph and his family. Lucy's death notice appeared in The Nashville Christian Advocate. The notice stated that she was born in Kentucky on 2 November 1807 and died on 11 February 1892. "She moved with her parents to Bedford County, Tennessee when she was about four years old." Lucy was buried at Smith Chapel Cemetery in Hurricane, Moore County, Tennessee. Four of her children lived in Moore County and that is probably where she died. Several other of her children lefft Tennessee for Arkansas. The children of Lucy Hurst and George Washington Hudlow were:

1. Nancy C. Hudlow was born 12 November 1826 in Bedford County, Tennessee. About 1845, she married Richard Nathaniel Hubbard in Bedford County. He was born there on 3 December 1828, the son of Nathaniel and Sarah Hix Hubbard. In 1850, Nathaniel and Nancy lived in their own home in Bedford County with two very young children. At a point between 1856 and 1859, they moved up to Dover, Pope County, Arkansas and were listed there in 1860 with six children. The youngest child was born in Arkansas. On 10 March 1862, Nathaniel enlisted for service in Company F, 15th Arkansas Infantry. "W. R. Hurdlon", probably William Riley Hudlow, the brother in law of Nathaniel Hubbard, enlisted in the same company on same date. William Hudlow survived the War, but we are not sure if Nathaniel did, as he was not listed on the 1870 census and Nancy appeared on it living in Dover as a widow with seven children. No burial place is known for him. Their youngest child, Marinda, was six years old, so Nathaniel could have died at a time after 1863 and before 1870. By 1880, most of her children were raised and Nancy still lived in Dover with the two youngest ones. In 1900, she lived in the Valley, Pope County, Arkansas home of her daughter "Dora" Kerns, who married George Washington Kerns. Nancy Hubbard died on 27 February 1905 in Pope County. She is listed as one of the burials at the Hubbard Cemetery in Pope County, which is said not to exist anymore. Also listed in the graveyard are several of her sons as well as several children named Hudlow, possibly her nieces and nephews. The descendants of Richard Nathaniel and Nancy C. Hudlow Hubbard were:

2. Pinckney Whitfield Hubbard, born in Bedford County, Tennessee on 3 December 1847, may have been called Whitfield. He was a young boy when the family moved to Pope County, Arkansas. It appears that his father served in the Civil War and may not have lived through it. Pinckney Whitfield married on 6 August 1868 to Mary Frances Boone, daughter of James P. Boone and Lydia West. Mary Frances was born on 13 November 1845 in Tennessee. This couple would raise eight sons in Pope County. In 1870 they were housekeeping in Liberty, Pope County, with a baby son. In 1880, they were listed with five sons in Valley, Pope County. In 1900 we find them with six sons at home and a seven year old granddaughter in the home. In 1910, married 42 years, they still lived in Liberty with one of their granddaughters, and their son Warren and his family lived next door. Mary Frances died in January of 1914 in Cottonwood, Pope County, and in 1920 Pinckney Whitfield lived with his son William and family in Liberty. On the 1930 census, he was listed in Phoenix, Pope County, with his son James Winfield Scott Hubbard and family. Pinckney Whitfield Hubbard died on 13 March 1939 in Scottsville, Pope County. No burial place is yet known.
3. George Webster Hubbard
3. William Rufus Hubbard
3. James Winfield Scott Hubbard
3. Reuben "Rube" Quitman Hubbard
3. Doctor Kirksey Hubbard
3. John Riley Hubbard
3. Warren Washington Hubbard
3. Walter Daniel Hubbard
2. Sarah Fredonia "Dona" "Dovey" Hubbard was listed in various ways on the censuses. She was born on 23 March 1850 in Bedford County, Tennessee. She is said to have married first in 1868 to a Benjamin A. Smith, about whom we know nothing, but we do find a marriage record of a "Sarah Frances M. E. Hubbard" marriage to Benjamin A. Smith on 30 March 1868 in Pope County, Arkansas.  We do note, however, that on the 1870 census, Sarah was in her mother's home as a single woman with her maiden name, so it is certainly possible that this marriage was for a different Hubbard bride.  She married to Jesse A. Coleman on 26 March 1876 in Pope County, Arkansas. He was born about 1844, probably in Indiana, but we do not have proof of his parents. On the 1880 census, we find Jesse and "Dovey" Coleman listed in Dover, Pope County. They have two small daughters. It is interesting that on this census, the three year old daughter is listed thus, but the younger, eight month old girl is listed "stepdaughter". If either were a stepdaughter, it seems it would be the elder one, Mary, in which case she would probably be a Smith. We are sure that this is Sarah Hubbard, for next door is her mother, the widow Nancy Hubbard. On this census, Jesse is listed as born in Tennessee, but in later years a daughter would consistently list Indiana. In the genealogical black hole between 1880 and the next census in 1900, Jesse Coleman died. On 24 February 1887, "Mrs. Dona Coleman" married to George Washington "Wash" Kerns in Pope County. He was born on 4 October 1838 in Kentucky or Tennessee. George had also been married before and had several children. In 1900, George and "Dora" were listed in Valley, Pope County, Arkansas with two of his children and two sons that they had together. Nancy Hubbard was living with them. In 1910 in the same, Georga and "Dona" lived with a son and with Penny Chambers, Sarah Fredonia's sister. In 1920 they were also listed in Valley, Pope County. Wash Kerns died on 17 July 1921 in Pope County. He was laid to rest at McFadden Cemetery in Dover, Pope County, Arkansas. We do not find Sarah listed on the 1930 census yet, but she died after it, on 3 June 1932, in Pope County. She is buried at McFadden Cemetery as well.
Sarah's children with Jessie Coleman were:
3. Mary Ozella Coleman
3. Margaret Coleman
Sarah's children with George Washington Kerns were:
3. Andrew Nathaniel Kerns
3. William Albert Kerns
2. Penny Ellen Hubbard was born on 18 November 1852 in Bedford County, Tennessee. Her name appears on various censuses as Peney and Pena. She first married to James H. Freeman on 20 August 1872 in Pope County. He was born about 1845 in Tennessee. They had one known child, born in June 1873. He must have died early in the marriage. Penny must have married a second time to a Grayson, first name unknown. On her marriage record for her third marriage on 17 August 1882, William H. Huckabee married Mrs. Peria A. Grayson. William H. Huckabee was born on 13 July 1854 and died on 29 December 1889. He is buried at the old Hubbard Cemetery in Pope County. The Huckabees had three children together. Lastly, Penny married on 21 August 1894 in Pope County to Lewis/Louis Dunham Chambers, who was born in Marion County, Tennessee on 17 July 1829. The wedding record lists her as "Mrs. P. E. Huckabee". In 1900, Penny and Louis Chambers lived at Liberty, Pope County, with her two Huckabee children. By 1910, she lived with her sister Sarah Kerns in Pope County and Louis Chambers, listed as married to second wife, lived in the County Home in Illinois, Pope County. Penny stated that she had four of six children still living at this time. In 1920, Pena E. Chambers, a widow, lived with her daughter Sarah Freeman Stark in Martin, Pope County. They were next door to the Rilda Rosson family, who was one of Penny's Huckabee children. Since she was listed as a widow, Mr. Chambers must have died before the census. Penny later filed for his Confederate pension. Penny died on 15 March 1929 in Pope County and was buried at the Hubbard Cemetery in Pope County. On a list of burials at the cemetery, her name is listed as "Phoebe Ellen Chambers", with no stone.
Penny's child with James Freeman was:
3. Sarah Freeman
Penny's children with William H. Huckabee were:
3. Marilda Ann "Rilda" Huckabee
3. William H. Huckabee
3. Fanny M. Huckabee
2. John W. Hubbard was born about 1854 in Bedford County, Tennessee. On 11 April 1875, he married Rosanna Hollowell in Pope County, Arkansas. She was the daughter of Christian Bingemon and Lyla Tramel Hollowell, born about 1854 in Orange County, Indiana. Her younger sister, Lillie Sephronia Hollowell, married John's cousin, Calvin David Hudlow, who was the son of William Riley and Elizabeth Hudlow. In 1880, John and Rosanna lived in Valley, Pope County, near his elder brother Pinkney. They had three small children. Rosanna died, either in Pope County or in Indian Territory, where a move was made about this time. John quickly remarried and he and second wife, Mary E., whose last name is unknown to us, lived in the Chickasaw Nation in 1900. Mary stated that she was born in Arkansas in July of 1860, and they had two small children. In 1910 the family lived in Jackson, Coal County, Oklahoma with two teenage children. John had been married twice, Mary once. In 1920 John and Mary were alone in their home in Hanraty, Coal County. John Hubbard died before 1930 and we do not have a date, place, or burial site. By 1930, Mary had moved to Needles, San Bernardino County, California, where she lived with her son, an engineer for the railroad. She was listed as a widow. Mary E. Hubbard died sometime after 1930. She is buried at the Needles Riverview Cemtery in Needles, San Bernardino County, California, with no dates on her stone.
John's children with Rosanna Hollowell were:
3. John A. Hubbard
3. Lilley B. Hubbard
3. Nancy M. Hubbard
John's children with Mary were:
3. Henry Clay Hubbard
3. Avis Lee Hubbard
2. George W. P. Hubbard was born on 30 June 1856 in Bedford County, Tennessee. He married Mollie Coble, daughter of W. H. Coble, mother unknown. George Hubbard is buried at the Hubbard Cemetery in Pope County. We do not know his death date. Mollie is also buried here. She died on 31 January 1896, and her obituary stated that she was survived by her husband and two children. So far we have not found the names of the children nor any further family information.
2. Joseph N. Hubbard was born in Pope County, Arkansas on 11 January 1859, not long after the family moved to Arkansas from Bedford County, Tennessee. He died at an early age on 14 October 1877 and was buried at the Hubbard Cemetery in Pope County. His middle name could have been Nathaniel, after his father.
2. Elias H. S. "Doc" Hubbard, born on 11 May 1861 in Pope County, Arkansas, married Ella Lucetta Neill on 21 July 1889 in Pope County. She was the daughter of John William and Lockie Elizabeth Ivy Neill, and she was born on 24 January 1871 in Wilson County, Tennessee. Elias and Ella had a child born in 1890. Elias died on 20 April 1894 and was buried at the Hubbard Cemetery in Pope County. Ella married Charles Thomlinson in 1892, so it seems that the marriage may have broken before Elias died. Ella and Charles moved to California, where she died on 27 December 1951 in Tulare County. She was buried there at Exeter Cemtery.
3. Kate Belle Hubbard
2. Marilda or Marinda A. Hubbard was born about 1863 in Pope County, Arkansas. She married William C. Burton on 30 November 1882 in Pope County. He was born in Georgia in 1858, and we do not yet find any proof of his parents. We cannot yet find this Burton family on the 1900 census; therefore, our knowledge has a large gap in detail. In 1910, they appear as residents of Center, Pope County, married 27 years with seven of ten children still alive and five of them in the home. In 1920, Will and Rilda burton lived in Liberty, Pope County, with their youngest daughter still at home. Also listed in their home was son John, a widower with three children. By 1930, Rilda had died and William Burton lived at Valley in Pope County with his grown daughter Ethel. A "son" named "Barton" was listed with them, sixteen years old. This person was not with them on the 1920 census, however. William Burton died sometime after 1930, but we have no burial record or dates yet. We only have census records to prove six children.
3. John C. Burton
3. Mary Scottie Burton
3. William Swillen Ezra Burton
3. Ethel B. Burton
3. George W. Burton
3. Bertha Burton

1. William Riley Hudlow was born on 23 July 1829 in Bedford County, Tennessee. He married twice in his life, and was the father of 21 children. He married Elizabeth Mourning Gobble on 22 April 1850 in nearby Lincoln County, Tennessee. She was born on 22 July 1831 to John Gobble and Ruhaney Maneas. In 1850, William and Elizabeth lived in Lincoln County as newlyweds, listed next door to her Gobble family. William and Elizabeth moved to Pope County, Arkansas in 1857, according to family accounts, and in 1860 they were listed in Dover, Pope County, Arkansas with four children, the youngest born in Arkansas in 1858. William's younger brother George lived with him. William enlisted for service with the 15th Arkansas Infantry in the Civil War on 10 March 1862 in Pope County. His brother in law Nathaniel Hubbard appears to have enlisted with him, same date, same outfit. William came back from the War and in 1870, he and Elizabeth lived in Moreland, Pope County, with five of their children still home. Also living with them was Minerva Jane Riggs, their eldest daughter.

William Riley & Elizabeth Gobble Hudlow

William Riley and Elizabeth Gobble Hudlow

Elizabeth Gobble Hudlow died on 23 June 1872 in Moreland, and was buried at "the Hubbard Place". This is probably the old Hubbard Cemetery, which probably does not exist anymore. She had borne a twelth child in late March. William Riley Hudlow remarried in Pope County the next year, on 23 February 1873, to Mary Frances Farmer. She was born 4 April 1850 in Georgia. We do not know her parents yet. In 1880, William and Mary Frances Hudlow lived in Moreland, Pope County, with seven children. In 1900 they were listed in Valley, Pope County. William was 70, Mary 50, and seven children were still at home. William died on 11 December 1901 in Pope County. He was buried at St Paul Methodist Cemetery, Gravel Hill, Pope County, Arkansas. In 1910 and in 1920, his widow Mary Farmer Hudlow lived with her son Charles in Pope County. Mary died on 17 March 1924 in Pope County and was laid to rest at St Paul Cemetery beside William. The land that William moved onto in 1857 is said to have stayed in the Hudlow family for almost a hundred years. William Riley Hudlow had 21 children with two wives. The children of William Riley and Elizabeth Gobble Hudlow were:

2. Minerva Jane Hudlow is said to be the first child of William and Elizabeth. We so far have no proof of this. She is reported to have been born about 1850. She does not appear on the 1850 census or the 1860 census with her parents, so if they did indeed have this child, it is likely that she did not live past age ten. However, there may be another explanation for some researchers inclusion of Minerva Jane: in 1870 in Moreland, Pope County, Arkansas, William and Elizabeth Hudlow were listed with five children in the home and also with a Minerva Jane Riggs, age twenty, born in Arkansas. Was this a daughter or someone living in their home? We believe that she may be the Minerva Jane Riggs who was an orphan in Conway County, Arkansas in earlier censuses and perhaps she was working as a helper in the Hudlow home. This would explain how she could be mistaken for a daughter. Any more information is welcome and all of this, except for the census information, is conjecture at this point.
2. George Herman B. Hudlow was born in Bedford County, Tennessee on 28 January 1851. He married in Pope County, Arkansas on 15 June 1871 to Almeda Lucinda Reynolds. She was born in April 1851 in Mississippi, the daughter of Andrew and Martha Jeans/Jeanes Reynolds. This marriage is of great interest to the researchers, as Andrew Reynolds, her father, was the son of William Reynolds who married Jane Milligan/Milliken in Greene County, Tennessee on 23 August 1790. This shows yet another family relationship between the Beard, Milligan/Millken, and Reynolds families for a very long time and several generations. These families made the same moves from Virginia to Greene County, Tennessee to Green and Adair Counties, Kentucky, down to Bedford County, Tennessee, and in this instance, to Pope County, Arkansas. William and Jane Reynolds also had a son, John Reynolds, who married a Mary Ann Hudlow about 1820 in Bedford County, Tennessee. She was probably of the same Hudlow family and possibly a sister to George Washington Hudlow who married Lucy Hurst, but we have no proof at this time. George Herman "Hurdle" and Almeda were listed in Liberty, Van Buren County, Arkansas on the 1880 census with four children. By 1900, they had moved into Indian Territory and lived in the Choctaw Nation; three of their four children were listed as still living. George died in February of 1910 and was possibly buried at the Oak Hill Memorial Park Cemetery in McAlester, Pittsburg County, Oklahoma, where his brother Joseph W. Hudlow also lies. There is apparently no stone, but a funeral home record states that "Mr. Hudlow" was buried there and it says that happened on 12 February 1910. In the 1910 census, we find Almeda, listed "A. L. Hudlow", a widow, in the home of her son Will Hudlow. They lived in Ada, Pontotoc County, Oklahoma. She died on 18 January 1914 in Stephens County, Oklahoma and was perhaps buried at the same cemetery as her husband, but we find no record of that yet.  Their children:
3.  Mary J. Hudlow
3.  John C. Hudlow
3.  William Henry Hudlow
3.  George W. Hudlow
3.  Tilman Hudlow
2. Calvin David Hudlow was born 1 February 1854 in Bedford County, Tennessee. He married Lillian Sephronia Hollowell on 4 January 1877 in Pope County, Arkansas. Lillian's sister Rosanna Hollowell married in 1875 to John W. Hubbard, cousin to Calvin Hudlow. On the 1880 census, we find Calvin and Lilley S. Hudlow listed with their two year old daughter, living in Valley, Pope County, Arkansas. Calvin's brother Joseph lived with him, and they were next door to his brother John and two homes away from William Riley Hudlow. This family is not yet found on any later censuses. Calvin is buried at St Paul's Methodist Church Cemetery in Gravel Hill, Pope County, Arkansas, no record of death date. His second and last child, Callie, was born in December of 1885, so he died after spring of 1885.  Lillie remarried on 5 August 1888, so he died before then.  She married Jeremiah M. Hudson in Pope County, Arkansas and they had several children. Lillie died in Carter County, Oklahoma in 1899.  The two children of Calvin David and Lillie Hudlow were:
3.  Ida B. Hudlow
3.  Callie Hudlow
2. Dora J. Hudlow, born 11 February 1856 in Bedford County, Tennessee, died as a child on 7 October 1865 in Moreland, Pope County, Arkansas. No burial place is known for Dora.
2. John Mack Hudlow was the first child of the family who was born in Arkansas, on 15 April 1858 in Pope County. He married Martha Ann George in 1878, probably in Pope County. She was born 29 Mach 1860 in Pope County, the daughter of Thomas and Frances Ann Smith George. In 1880, John and Martha were in Valley, Pope County, Arkansas with their first child. Between 1890 and 1893, they moved to Indian Territory and in 1900 were listed in the Chickasaw Nation with five of their children at home. John was a grocer and in 1903, an article in a local paper stated that he was selling his "stock of goods" to a Mr. Clark. In 1910, John and Martha were living at Waurika, Jefferson County, Oklahoma, where he was a liveryman and they seem to have been running a boarding home or hotel, as they had fifteen boarders listed. George and Martha divorced before 1920. On that census, he has remarried and lives at Grayson, Jefferson County, Oklahoma with second wife Cordelia Porter. She was born on 1 June 1872 in Texas. John's daughter Alta Dunn and her child lived with them this census. In 1930 in Waurika, Jefferson County, John and Cordelia Hudlow had a furniture store. "Ann Hudlow", who was divorced, lived in Comanche, Stephens County, Oklahoma at this time. John Hudlow died in 1934 in Waurika, Jefferson County, and was buried at the Waurika Cemetery. His second wife Cordelia died on 11 November 1939 and is buried beside him at Waurika. Martha Ann George Hudlow passed away on 5 April 1940 in Comanche, Stephens County, Oklahoma and lies at the Fairlawn Cemtery there. Ten known children of John and Martha Hudlow:
3.  Beulah E. Hudlow
3.  Pearl Josephine Hudlow
3.  Irma Hudlow
3.  Frances Girlie Hudlow
3.  Savannah Mae Hudlow
3.  Osha Alice Hudlow
3.  Annie Alta Hudlow
3.  William Riley Hudlow
3.  Dewey Hudlow
3.  Cleda Bernice Hudlow
2. Joseph Washington Hudlow was born on 21 August 1859 in Moreland, Pope County, Arkansas. About 1899, Joseph married Helen Arrie Jones. We do not know her parents, but she was born in 1881 in Corinth, Adams County, Mississippi and her father was born in Georgia. Joseph and Helen appear to have lived in Mexico for a bit, as their first child was born there in January 1901. Then they went to Indian Territory in what is now Oklahoma and were there by June of 1902 for birth of a second child. In 1910 they were listed living in McAlester, Pittsburg County, Oklahoma with three children. Joseph was listed as a "collector, mercantile company", and Arrie worked in sales in a grocery. In 1920 they lived in the same place with four children. At some point in the next ten years, they must have divorced. Helen remarried to James L. Snedden and in 1930 they lived in Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma where he was a general superintendent for an oil producer. Helen's youngest child, Helen Hudlow, was with them, listed as stepdaughter to Mr. Snedden. We have not found Joseph on the 1930 census yet, but his reported death date is in February 1940, burial at Oak Hill Memorial Park, McAlester, Pittsburg County, Oklahoma. Helen Snedden died in 1960 and was buried at Memorial Park Cemetery in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. They had four children:
3.  Edward W. Hudlow
3.  Betty Jane Hudlow
3.  Nell Jo Hudlow
3.  Helen Gatewood Hudlow
2. Betty Frances Hudlow was born on 1 November 1862 in Moreland, Pope County, Arkansas. She died as a child in November 1865 in Pope County.
2. Adonis Hudlow was born about 1864 in Moreland, Pope County, Arkansas. He died about 1875 in the same.
2. Francis Monroe Hudlow was born on 22 February 1865 in Pope County, Arkansas. He married Minerva Frances Johnston in Atkins, Pope County, on 7 November 1886. She was the daughter of John Alexander and Lucinda Rush Johnston, born on 8 September 1870 in Fayetteville, Washington County, Arkansas. We have yet to find them on the 1900 census, but they seem to have lived in Arizona or New Mexico at that time, according to birthplaces of children. Francis Hudlow worked with the railroad. In 1910, he and Frances lived at Hillside Station in Yavapai County, Arizona and listed five of their six children still living. All five were in their home at that time. Also living with them was Chester George, their nephew, his wife and baby. He was the son of the younger sister of Francis Monroe Hudlow, Mary Margaret Hudlow George. We continue to search for this family on the 1920 census, and in 1930 they were living as empty nesters at Hayden, Gila County, Arizona, and Francis worked for a copper company. Descendants give his death date as 28 June 1946 in Prescott, Yavapai County, Arizona. He was laid to rest at Greenwood Cemetery in Maricopa County, Arizona. Minerva Frances Johnston Hudlow died on 12 September 1954 in Tucson, Pima County, Arizona. We have no definite burial place for her.  The children were:
3.  Ulah May Hudlow
3.  Cora Dell Hudlow
3.  Grace Alice Hudlow
3.  Joseph Oscar Hudlow
3.  Bertha Hudlow
3.  Floyd Leroy Hudlow
2. Mary Margaret Hudlow, called Maggie, was born 29 December 1867 in Moreland, Pope County, Arkansas. She married in Pope County on 4 April 1883 at the age of seventeen to William A. George. He was born on 2 January 1862 in Arkansas, the son of Thomas Alexander George and Francis Ann Smith. They raised a fine family and were listed in 1900 in Valley, Pope County with six children (one being sibling is Nancy Alice George). In 1910, 1920, and 1930 they still lived in Valley. William died on 20 February 1937 and was laid to rest at Old Baptist Cemetery in Center Valley, Pope County, Arkansas. Mary Margaret Hudlow George died 28 April 1949 and was also interred at Old Baptist.  The eleven children:
3.  Burke William George
3.  Francis Chester George
3.  Tracye Ann George
3.  Lester Edgar George
3.  Burney Hobart George
3.  Verdie Florine George
3.  Mark H. George
3.  Hazel Josephine George
3.  Truman Steele George
3.  Dorothy Maree George
3.  James Charles George
2. Lee Allen Hudlow was born on 8 March 1870 in Moreland, Pope County, Arkansas.  We find his name sometimes listed as "Lee Alvin".  We find a marriage record in Sebastian County, Arkansas for a Lee A. Hudlow who married Rosa Meador on 12 July 1891.  Both his and her residence was listed as Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory. We have researched Rosa and found her parents to be George Washington Daley Meadows and wife Serilda Ann Peters. Rosa was born in Arkansas on 19 April 1876. Her family was found listed in 1850 and in 1860 in Crawford County, Arkansas.  In 1870 they were in Liberty, Pope County, and in 1880, Rosa was four years old living at home in Lafayette, Crawford County, Arkansas.  By 1900, the Meadows family were listed in the Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory.  Lee Allen Hudlow was murdered in the course of a robbery in the railroad yards of North Little Rock, Arkansas in 1892. He was buried at the St Paul Cemetery in Pope County, Arkansas.  Rosa Meadows Hudlow is said to have died in Pontotoc County, Oklahoma in 1895. Rosa was with child when Lee was killed, and the one child was living with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. James Hudlow, in 1910.
3.  Beatrice Salina "Bertie" Hudlow
2. James Albert Hudlow was born on 22 March 1872 in Moreland, Pope County, Arkansas. On Christmas Day 1890, James married Elizabeth Jane Stewart, the daughter of George W. Stewart and Jane Ellen Freeman. Elizabeth was born in Moreland, Pope County on 19 November 1873. Ten years later, on the 1900 census, James and Eliza J Hudlow lived in Moreland with two children. In 1910, listed in Illinois, Pope County, they had four children and their niece "Bettie" Hudlow in their home. In 1920 in same three children were at home. They lived at Welborn, Conway County, Arkansas on the 1930 census, in the home of their son Joyce and his wife. James died on 16 June 1959 at Morrilton, Conway County, Arkansas, and he was buried at St Paul Methodist Cemetery in Gravel Hill, Pope County, Arkansas. Elizabeth Jane also died at Morrilton, on 26 January 1961. She lies beside James at St Paul's.
3.  Annie Alice Hudlow
3.  Joseph Ernest Hudlow
3.  Grace Beatrice Hudlow
3.  Joyce Leonard Hudlow
3.  Grady Troy Hudlow
3.  Loretta Josephine Hudlow

1. George Washington Hudlow II was born on 9 March 1832 in Flat Creek, Bedford County, Tennessee. George moved to Arkansas as a young man, and in 1860 he was listed with his brother William Riley Hudlow's family in Pope County, Arkansas. On 7 February 1861, he married Mary Sephronia Gray in Arkansas. She was born on 13 November 1845 in Pope County to John Gray and Mary Jane "Polly" Chitwood. George enlisted in the 4th Arkansas (Union) Cavalry Regiment on 19 October 1863 and served as a private. In 1870, George and Mary were listed in Dover, Pope County, with their brood of three young children. Two homes away was her widowed mother. In 1880, George and Mary lived in Wilson, Pope County, Arkansas with seven children. Mary died in 1890 and was buried at the Atkins City Cemetery in Pope County. Contrary to common practice, George did not remarry and appeared on the 1900 census in Atkins, Pope County, Arkansas as a widower with his grown son James, who was married, and his daughter Nora in the home. George then moved back to Tennessee at some point. In 1910, he lived at Tullahoma, Coffee County, Tennessee with his youngest daughter. His sister, Fanny Silvertooth, lived with them as a widow. In 1920, at the age of 87, George lived with his daughter Susan Stuart and her daughter in Tullahoma. He died on 28 April 1922 in Tullahoma and was buried at the Smith Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery there.

2. Polly Jane Hudlow  was born in about 1863; she appeared on the 1870 census as a seven year old and in 1880 as seventeen.  We find a marriage record for Polly Hudlow, born 1863, to B. A. Garner, born 1857, who married in Pope County, Arkansas on 19 September 1886. We have no further information about Polly.
2. M. Frances A. Hudlow was a daughter born about 1865 in Arkansas. After the 1880 census, we find no further record.
2. John Riley Hudlow was born in 1868 in Arkansas.  We cannot find John after the 1880 census, when he was a boy of twelve.
2. Reuben Henry "Rube" Hudlow was born on 17 July 1870 in Arkansas, a twin to his brother McKinley.  He married on 25 November 1894 in Pope County, Arkansas to Elsie Etta Berry.  She was born on 19 March 1881 in Arkansas.  We do not know the names of her parents. In 1900, Ruben and Elsie lived at St. Frances, Greene County, Arkansas with a small son.  In 1910 they lived with their four children in Powell, Craighead County, Arkansas.  In Reynolds, Greene County, Arkansas in 1920, they had four children at home.  They were empty nesters in 1930, living in North Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas.  Reuben Hudlow died on 3 April 1942 and he was buried at the Edgewood Memorial Park in Levy, Pulaski County, Arkansas.  Elsie Berry Hudlow passed away on 16 February 1945 in North Little Rock and she was buried with Rube at Edgewood Memorial Park.
2. McKinley "Kin"  Hudlow, a twin to Rube, was born on 17 July 1870 in Arkansas.  We have seen information that he died in 1940, but so far we have not found any documentation or census information for him.
2. George Ephraim "Eph" Hudlow was born on 2 February 1874 in Arkansas.  He married about 1897 in Arkansas to Lula Gipson.  She was born on 28 August 1878 in Arkansas, the daughter of Margaret A. Vanzandt and Eligah Leander Gipson. In 1900, Eph and Lula and their one year old daughter lived in the home of her parents in Aatkins, Pope County.  In 1910 they were listed living in Wilson in Pope County.  With them was a young girl named Annie Dixon, but no relationship was given.  Eph submitted a draft registration in Pope County in 1918.  In 1920, Eph was listed in Wilson, Pope County, farming.  Lula was a dressmaker.  Their daughter Ruby had married Lem Spurgin and they lived at home with her parents.  In 1930, Lem and Ruby Spurgin and their children were in North Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas and George and Lula Hudlow were living in the home. George worked for a sewer pipe company.  He died on 12 February 1940 in Pulaski County and was buried back home in Pope County at the Atkins City Cemetery.  Lula died 29 April 1965 in Arkansas and is also at Atkins Cemetery.
2. James Jackson Hudlow was born in Arkansas on 20 March 1878.  He married on 15 April 1900 in Conway County, Arkansas to Jessie Oney Wallace.  We do not know her parents names, but she was born on 6 October 1882 in Arkansas.  In 1900 when the census was taken, James and Jessie lived in Wilson, Pope County, with his widowed father. In 1910 they still lived in Wilson, and had added four children.  James was on a section gang for the railroad.  By 1920, they had moved to Calvin, Hughes County, Oklahoma, where James was now a brakeman for the railroads.  By the next census in 1930, James and Jessie were divorced and she was living in the home of her married daughter in Hartshorne, Pittsburg County, Oklahoma.  James passed away on 7 July 1944 in Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas. Jessie died in Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas on 11 January 1945.  We have no knowledge of burial places.
2. Lucy Hudlow was born on 28 June 1880 in Arkansas.  She married Robert R. Harvel on the Fourth of July, 1899 in Conway County, Arkansas. He was born in June 1877 in Tennessee; we do not know the names of his parents.  In 1900, Lucy and Robert lived in the home of her father in Atkins, Pope County.  In 1910, they lived in Centerville, Yell County, Arkansas.  They had three of four children still living.  In 1920 in same, five children were in the home.  In 1930, Lucy lived in Sand Springs, Tulsa County, Oklahoma. She was the head of household, listed as married for twenty years, and had three of her children at home. We do not know what happened to Robert, but Lucy is buried at the Warner Memorial Cemetery in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, with a death date of 1 March 1964.
2. Susan Susie Hudlow was born on 9 August 1886 in Arkansas.  She married Robert Rucker in 1907.  In 1910, Susie and Robert were listed living in Sugar Loaf, St. Clair, Illinois with a one year old daughter.  Robert worked as a railroad foreman.  Robert died in the same year, on 7 December 1910. He was buried at the Atkins City Cemetery in Pope County, Arkansas, and Susie remarried to an unknown Stuart/Stewart before 1920.  We do not know what happened to him,  but in 1920 they were apparently not together, as Susan Stuart was listed that census living with her father in Tullahoma, Coffee County, Tennessee, and working in a sewing factory, noted as a widow.  With her was her eleven year old daughter Thelma Rucker.  In 1930 they were at same, "Sue" Rucker, not Stuart, a widow who worked at an overall factory.  With her was Thelma.  In 1940 Sue and Thelma Rucker lived in Levy, Pulaski County, Arkansas.  Sue was listed as a widow who was a seamstress in a garment factory.  We have no further information or records.
2. Nora Belle Hudlow was born in February 1889 in Pope County, Arkansas.  She married on 18 December 1910 in Coffee County, Tennessee to Charles Schesteen Weaver.  He was born on 30 September 1891 in Tennessee, the son of Joe Hickman and Nancy Elizabeth Gray Weaver.  Charles served in World War I.  In 1920 he and Nora were living in Tullahoma, Coffee County, Tennessee.  In 1930 they lived at Mt Harris, Routt County, Colorado, and the same in 1940, when Charley Weaver was listed as a sawyer.  Nora Bell Hudlow Weaver died on 7 January 1977 and was buried at the Steamboat Springs Cemetery in Routt County, Colorado.  Charles passed away on 21 June 1990 in Routt County and is at Steamboat Springs Cemetery as well.

1. Elizabeth Emily Hudlow was born in Bedford County, Tennessee on 2 June 1833. (Her name could have been Emily Elizabeth.) She married in Tennessee in about 1851, to David Reavis. We are hindered in our research of this family by a lack of the 1860 census record, as we cannot yet find them. Any help would be appreciated. In 1870 they lived in Bedford County with six children at home. Next household was listed Lucy Hudlow, Eli

1. Sarah E. "Sallie" Hudlow was born about 1837 in Bedford County, Tennessee. Sarah was listed still at home with her widowed mother on the 1870 census in Bedford County. She was 28 years old and worked as a school teacher. Sarah's age was thirteen in 1850, twenty in 1860, and 28 in 1870, and after she married, she continued to get younger....She married John Henry Plemons on 6 April 1875 in Moore County, Tennessee.  He was the son of Samuel N. Plemons/Plemmons and Hannah S. Sumner of Gilmer County, Georgia, born there in May 1850. We are looking for John and Sarah Plemons on the 1880 census, but so far no luck finding them.  In 1900 they were in Hamilton County, Tennessee where he was a farm worker, and they stated that they had one living child of one child born.  Sarah's birth was given as November of 1849, making her within a year of the same age as her husband, but this is not so.  In 1910 they were listed in Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee, and John was a watchman for a factory.  We believe that Sarah died in 1921.  There is a gravestone for "Sallie E. Plemons" at the Chattanooga Memorial Park in Hamilton County, giving her birth as 1840 and death in 1921.  John Henry Plemons died the next year, on 11 December 1922.  On his death record in Hamilton County, he was buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Hamilton County and he was a widower when he died.  [note that we have seen some families report that Sarah died in 1898 and was buried in Sevier County, Tennessee, but that is a different Sarah as ours was still alive and listed on 1900 and 1910 censuses.  Their only child was a son:

2.  Harry Walter Plemons was born on 15 July 1879 in Tennessee.  As a young man, he served in the Spanish American war 1898-1899.  We lose sight of his whereabouts after that, but it seems that he married a bride named Clara before he submitted his World War I draft registration on 10 September 1918.  Filed in Decatur, Macon, Illinois, it reveals that Harry was a brakeman for the Wabash Railroad and his nearest relative was Mrs. Clara Plemons at his address in Decatur.  No 1920 census record is yet found, but in October 1923 he married a second wife, Mary Anna McIntire, in Salt Lake City, Utah.  She was born on 25 August 1895 in Ogden, Weber County, Utah and was the daughter of Joseph A. McIntire and Mary Rose Clark.  In 1930 Harry and Mary Plemons lived in Omaha, Nebraska and had a four year old son.  In 1935 they were in Cheyanne, Wyoming.  In 1940 they were listed in Denver, Colorado with only the one son.  Harry Walter Plemons died on 28 December 1955 in Ogden, Weber County, Utah and was buried in the Ogden City Cemetery there.  His widow "Nan" filed an application for a veteran's headstone for his war service and it was approved.  She died in Ogden on 21 May 1976 and was buried at the same cemetery.
3.  Harry Walter Plemons Jr.

1. Frances "Fanny" Hudlow was born 15 October 1842 in Bedford County. She married James H. Silvertooth on 5 October 1867 in that county. James was born on 3 February 1846 in Tennessee, the son of James P. and Rachel Silvertooth. We have not located them in 1870, but in 1880 James and Fanny were listed in Hurricane Township, Moore County, Tennessee, just a few homes away from Fanny's brother Joseph Hudlow and family. In 1900, James and Fanny were still there and had two grown children at home. James died on 11 April 1902 in Lynchburg, Moore County, and was buried at Smith Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery near Tullahoma. Fanny was on the 1910 census living in the home of her brother George Washington Hudlow in Moore County. She was a widow and worked as a seamstress in a factory. Fanny died on 23 February 1916, probably in Moore County. She was laid to rest with her husband at Smith Chapel. The children of Fanny and James Silvertooth were:

2. Joseph Milton Silvertooth was born in Moore County, Tennessee on 17 September 1870.  He married Minnie Smith on 20 June 1909 in Coffee County, Tennessee and they were listed on the 1910 census in Tullahoma in Coffee County, married one year.  Both of them are shown as married previously.  Joseph may be the J. M. Silvertooth who married Effie Taylor in White County, Tennessee on 18 June 1893, but we are not sure.  (In 1900, a Joseph Silvertooth is living with an Evans family in Hamilton County, Tennessee, listed as a brother in law.  He is listed as "married", but no wife is included in the household.
